The sun sets at
the end of the North East line, Nong Khai. When the Friendship
Bridge was planned and constructed the idea was for the line to
continue onto Laos and indeed it does continue onto the middle
of the bridge where, suspended above the Mekong, it stops,
quietly rusting. One day, maybe, the Laos authorities may get
their act together and complete the line, it's not as if it's
costing them anything...

Watching the sun
set from the Thai side of the Mekong. Lazing on the southern
bank here has got to be one of life's great moments and a
highlight of a visit to Thailand.
People tend not to
stay too long in Nong Khai however, using it as a place to enter
or leave Laos, indeed I'm just as guilty. I've passed through
here many a time over the years but probably overnighted no more
than a couple of times...
